Sonya Curry’s Mother Candy Adams Is The First Chef Of Her Family

Candy Adams, short for Candy Wyms Adams, is the mother of Sonya Curry and the grandmother to NBA superstars Stephen Curry and Seth Curry. She may not garner any of the recognition that any of her children and grandchildren have, but her role in their growth is insurmountable.

Keep reading to learn more about Curry’s grandmother and the trials that she overcame to shape her daughter’s future.

Candy Adams Always Has Fun During Her Birthdays

Adams was born on May 6, 1949, in Virginia, the US. Her parents were Walter Wyms and Evelyn (Snell) Wyms. She grew up in Wadsworth Street, Radford.

Candy has had multiple siblings, including Lulabelle Lewis, Jack E. Snell, Walter L. Wyms, and Max Albert Snell Sr. Besides them, she also has an adopted sister, Kim Stewart, along with half-brothers Tommy and Ed Lewis and one half-sister, Carolyn Lewis.

The 74-year-old mother of Sonya is outgoing and likes to have fun with her family. It is no surprise that her daughter turned out the same. During her birthdays, she is often pictured having brunch with her grandsons and daughter. The OG grandma still has the moves and can be seen dancing with her family.

Faced Racism In Her Earlier Days

Growing up as an African-American person was hard in the 1900s. In an interview alongside her daughter in 2019, Candy opened up about the racist acts she had to endure. She explained that as a child, she had to walk 5 miles to the nearest black schools in the 50s and 60s.

Cars were not readily accessible to people of color like they are now. To make matters worse, they were also not allowed to ride the bus. Additionally, her family also exclusively shopped at black-owned supermarkets. In other supermarkets, they would get followed by white people.

This experience didn’t end in high school either, as students there sang a very racist song. Her brothers would get beaten up several times there. Due to fear for her children, Candy’s mother would not let them go outside.

And whenever she left, she would be addressed by the N-word several times and get into fights.

“I always got in fights. Every time I got out I would get into a scuffle because I’m not going to be [called] too many ‘n——.’ That’s just me.”

She Has Already Lost Two Of Her Brothers

May 21, 2014, was a sad day for Candy Adams as her brother, Walter Wyms, passed away. The departed soul was a U.S. Army veteran and also had worked as a concrete finisher. His memorial was held three days later, on May 24, in Mount Olive Methodist Church, Virginia, with Pastor Sharon Bower and Pastor Carl Marshall officiating.

Besides Walter, Candy lost her other brother, Max, in 2007 after his fight with a short illness. He had worked in the Lynchburg Foundry for 31 years before his retirement. His funeral was held on September 7, 2007, in the same church where Walter was buried.

Candy Adams’ Education And Career

Sonya’s mother Candy finished her earlier education at Christiansburg Institute in 1964. She then attended Radford High and passed with flying colors in 1967. Finally, she graduated from New River Community College in 1980.

As for her career path, Candy was a former chef at her daughter’s school, the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in Huntersville, North Carolina. This technically made her the first chef in the Curry Family. No disrespect to Steph’s wife, Ayesha Curry.

Her Marriage with Sonya’s Father, Cleive Ester Adams

The details regarding Candy’s meeting with her husband, Cleive Ester Adams, remain undisclosed. However, it is believed that they met in their college years. Various sources point out that they got married in the 1960s and got along well.

Cleive Adams has been serving as a bishop for Way of the Cross Church of Christ in Alexandria, Virginia, since 2018. Before that, he was a Pastor of the Church since 2010 before serving as the District Elder in Virginia since 2017. He has also been acting as the owner and operator of his own business, Rocky Mount Drywall Service, for over 30 years.

They welcomed their firstborn, Sonya, on May 30, 1966. The pair also had three children besides Sonya: India Adams, Lyrissa Safford, and Cleive Larun Adams Jr.

During the earlier years of their marriage, the family lived in a trailer home in Radford, Virginia. They did all they could to provide for their children while living in a predominantly white area at a time when racism was rampant.

As for the pair’s current relationship status, the two are no longer married. The two have reportedly gone on their separate ways, as stated by multiple reports. Adams’ Facebook profile explicitly mentions that she is single.

All Of Candy Adams’ Children Are Doing Well

Candy’s children, Sonya, India, Cleive Jr., and Lyrissa, have gotten older and grown up to appreciate her contributions. Their old mama left no stone unturned for Sonya and her siblings’ careers and provided great parental support. She also wishes her kids on National Son and Daughter’s Day.

The kids also return the favor and wish her on her birthdays and Mother’s Day.

Candy’s oldest daughter, Sonya, is the most successful out of the bunch. She played volleyball at Virginia Tech and won all the awards there. In addition, she met her future husband, Dell Curry, there while watching a basketball game. Furthermore, she is also the president of Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in North Carolina.

As for Candy’s other children, they all are doing well in their respective careers. India is the Head of School at Phoenix Montessori Academy, while Clieve Jr. is the athletic director at Ferrum College. In addition, Lyrissa also seems to be doing good for herself.
